The Agronomy, Horticulture, Plant Pathology, and Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering Departments at Iowa State University and the USDA-ARS National Laboratory for Agriculture and the Environment conduct research and outreach focused on cover crops. Cover crop research projects address their effectiveness in improving soil and water quality, cover crop effects on weeds, diseases, and pests, and the agronomic aspects of incorporating cover crops into cropping systems in Iowa. Other field and greenhouse studies are evaluating different potential cover crop species and their impact on soil microbial ecology.
Cover Crop Recipes
RECIPE - POST CORN SILAGE, GOING TO SOYBEAN: USE CEREAL RYE
The following recipe provides an introductory approach to integrating a cover crop into a corn silage–soybean rotation. The early harvest of corn silage provides an extended planting window for establishing a cereal rye cover crop.

The following recipe provides an introductory approach for planting a cover crop after corn silage harvest and then planting corn for grain or silage as the next crop.
RECIPE - POST SOYBEAN, GOING TO CORN: USE OATS
Often the easiest place to begin is to plant a cover crop ahead of a soybean cash crop following corn, so consider starting with the companion recipe titled Post Corn, Going to Soybean: Use Cereal Rye.
